An Appalachian backpacking trip for Rubyists in the fall of 2024

jeremy.jpg

👋 Hey there! I’m Jeremy Smith, a Ruby developer who loves backpacking. I’m putting together a backpacking trip in the southern Appalachians for 6-12 fellow Rubyists in the fall of 2024.

If you’re interested, check out the details below and fill out the interest form. I’ll be nailing down the schedule and details by late spring/early summer.

General Details

I’m still working out the details, but here’s roughly what I’m thinking.

🗺️ Location

TBD. Most likely a section of the Appalachian Trail, either starting or ending in Hot Springs, NC. If that’s the case, the closest airport would be Asheville Regional Airport.

🗓️ Timeframe

TBD. Most likely 3-5 days on the trail. Dates will be in September or October. (I’m planning to attend Rails World, so not the week of September 22.)

💰 Cost

Free! I mean, I’m not personally charging anything. This is an informal trip among Ruby friends, new and old. You will, of course, need to pay for your own travel, accommodations, food, backpacking gear, etc. And we will split any shared costs, like a shuttle service (if we need to be picked up or dropped off) or gas (if we share rides).

📋 Logistics

I’ll do my best to be a good host on the trail. I’ll set the itinerary, communicate the details with everyone, provide trail maps, organize transportation from our vehicles to the trailhead, and help everyone be as informed and comfortable as possible.

You’ll be responsible for your own travel to the region, your own personal safety, and your own gear and provisions.
